Since the beginning, the Mexico National football team’s coach has been vocal about how his world cup squad won’t have many surprising names. From this alone, we can take a stab that the squad will definitely remain the same as before.

One of the most controversial aspects of the El Tri squad is the injury, especially in the front. For the last couple of years or so, the Mexico national team has struggled with goal-scoring droughts due to the forward being injured every now and then. The majority of the forwards of the team aren’t really in the best of form and fitness so it’s very interesting to know which player-coach Gerardo ‘Tata’ Martino will choose for his squad.

What are the strengths and weaknesses of the Mexico National Soccer Team?

Strength

Since the last seven editions of FIFA World Cup, Mexico has always qualified for the round of 16. But that is as far as they have gone. This time around, El Tri has hired Tata Martino, yes, the same coach who guided Argentina to the World Cup finals in 2014.

Talking about the team’s strength, Mexico is both technically and tactically sound. They have players who are well-versed in keeping the ball, but the question is whether they will be able to create as many chances against the opposition and that’s where Chucky Lozano’s expertise comes into play.

Chucky alongside Alexis Vega, who plays on the left side, Uriel Antuna, playing on the right side, and last but certainly not least, Diego Lanez will play a pivotal part in whether Mexico will advance into further stages of the World Cup or not. All three of them are also essentially their team’s playmakers and if by any chance, the opposition was able to shut them all down, it will definitely create a lot of chaos inside the team.

Weakness

The team’s weakness is something that needs to be taken very carefully otherwise Tata Martino’s men might not even make it into the round of 16. Their goalscoring and set-piece defending is really weak.

The forward position of Mexico has been like a revolving door for a long time, but the real cause of concern is not the finishing ability but how the midfielders will be able to feed the balls forward. As we talked about earlier, if the wingers are stopped, then it becomes really difficult for the team to open up the scoring board.
